Christmas Tree Recycling at Home Depot Midtown/Buckhead Today

Midtown Home Depot, 650 Ponce de Leon
Buckhead Home Depot, 2525 Piedmont Rd., N
E

Keep Atlanta Beautiful, Buckhead Boy Scout Troop 298, Davey Tree Company and Atlanta Home Depot’s are teaming up again for Bring One for the Chipper annual Christmas Tree recycling program. Since 1991, “Bring One for the Chipper,” has collected over 5 million trees.  The program produces tangible environmental benefits while helping local governments comply with state regulations that prohibit the disposal of yard trimmings in lined municipal landfills.  The mulch from these trees has been used for playgrounds, local government beautification projects, and residential yards. The high quality, weed-free and pest-free mulch can be obtained for your large-scale landscaping project free of charge. Contact Davey Tree Service at 770-451-7911 for more information.

Carrot Apple Juice Recipe

January 6th, 2012 by Leila No comments »

Today I made all organic Carrot Apple Juice in my juicer for breakfast:

  • 7 organic carrots of various sizes, washed and ends chopped off but not peeled
  • 3 organic granny smith apples cored and sliced but again not peeled

This juice is very simple and tasty.  You can make more or less, I usually use about twice as many carrots as apples but not exactly. If you do not use organic carrots and apples then you should peel them both.

Carrots are an excellent source of vitamin A / beta carotene, vitamin k, vitamin c and many other.  Studies have shown carrots to be benefit cardiovascular health and to have anti-cancer benefits.  I have always heard that carrots helped your eye health but there aren’t as many studies about that particular health benefit.  I can say, however, that after I started juicing my eyesight improved and I had to change my glasses/contact prescription – yay! (This was after a couple of years of juicing daily but still…  I thought my eyesight would get worse as I aged no matter what!)

And apples…well an apple a day…  Ok to be exact apples help to protect your bones and they help to prevent Alzheimer’s and several cancers including breast cancer.  Apples can also help to lower cholesterol, assist in weight loss and diabetes management.  Plus an apple of two mixed with vegetables really help the taste of the juice :-)

I use the Breville 800JEXL Juice Fountain Elite 1000-Watt Juice Extractor and have been very happy with it. It is easy to use, easy to clean and I’ve been using it now without any problems for almost two years.

Georgia In Season Produce – Early October

Vidalia Onions

Vidalia Onions

Food shipped by air really racks up global warming emissions which is one of the reasons it is better to eat food grown locally.

I, for one, am a big believer in supporting our local businesses which includes farms… so I buying local is also about supporting the economy here in Georgia..

Anyway, we can’t always by produce locally because we don’t grow everything here in Georgia and, of course, some items are not in season throughout the year.

Here is a list of what is in season in Georgia in early October and you should be able to find this type of produce at local Georgia farms and Atlanta farmer’s markets.  Buy these items if you can from local farmer’s and buy your other produce from larger markets like the Dekalb Farmer’s Market, Whole Foods etc.

  • Apples
  • Bell Pepper
  • Cabbage
  • Cucumbers
  • Field Peas
  • Grapes
  • Greens
  • Melons
  • Muscadines
  • Pecans
  • Snap Beans
  • Sweet Corn
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Tomatoes
  • Vidalia Onions
  • Yellow Squash
